I have heard this before…LBJ at his typical Texas best. I was just visiting the LBJ Ranch last week while attending the NCAA convention in San Antonio. You learn so much about him, and really understand him, when you see the Texas ranch that he loved so much. He was brutish, rough, and crude, but he also is the only president who paid attention to us in Appalachia (WV), and via the skilledlegislative precision he could wield, passed over 200 laws regarding education in this country.
I used to grade AP exams in San Antonio and had multiple opportunities to visit the ranch, but never went. I am kicking myself for not doing it.
I became an LBJ fan when I interviewed for my first history job and was asked to do a lecture on LBJ for my teaching presentation. I have always been impressed with his compassion.
