I saw a link to this video on J.L. Bell’s Twitter feed. I don’t know how I missed it. T.H. Breen talks about his book American Insurgents, American Patriots: The Revolution of the People. Jack Rakove discusses his book, Revolutionaries: A New History of the Invention of America.
I read through half of Breen’s book, but had to put it aside for other projects. I now look forward to returning to it. Breen gives a lot of attention in this book to the place of evangelical religion in the coming of the Revolution.
Toward the end of the video Rakove talks about Thomas Jefferson and raises a very interesting historical question (and I paraphrase): How does a guy who is raised in the top 1% of the social structure and who benefits from a lavish lifestyle built on the backs of his slaves at Monticello, end up being such a strong advocate for democracy, public education, equality, etc….

Intellectual courage is easier than personal courage.
Anyone can talk. Reality's a bitch.
