He claims to be, but he attends a Miami church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and financially supports Protestant organizations. His staff claims he is still Catholic because he was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Roman Catholic Church.
As some of my readers know, I was baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church. In my teens I left the Roman Catholic Church (along with my family) and became an evangelical Protestant, an affiliation I still more or less affirm. While I have deep sympathies with the Catholic Church of my childhood, have often flirted with the idea of returning, and still consider myself a fellow traveler with the Church, I do not identify myself as a Catholic.
Unless, of course, I was running for office and needed an endorsement from the Catholic Advocate Candidate Fund. 🙂
