Stanley Fish on the Crisis in the Humanities

John Fea   |  October 21, 2010 Leave a Comment

Stanley Fish uses his October 11 New York Times column to slam George M. Philip, the president of SUNY-Albany, for cutting programs in French, Italian, classics, Russian and theater.  Fish writes:

…it is the job of presidents and chancellors to proclaim the value of liberal arts education loudly and often and at least try to make the powers that be understand what is being lost when traditions of culture and art that have been vital for hundreds and even thousands of years disappear from the academic scene.

Meanwhile, over at First Thoughts, Micah Mattix discusses the “Judeo-Christian foundation for humanistic inquiry” and suggests that the humanities are thriving at church-related schools.
