Washington Monthly on the Texas Social Studies Debates

John Fea   |  January 22, 2010 Leave a Comment

The January/February 2010 Washington Monthly has the best piece of reporting I have seen to date on the battle over the Texas Social Studies Standards. Mariah Blake’s essay explores, among other things, the power that the Texas Board of Education has over textbook publishers. In other words, the conservatives on the Board (Don McElroy is featured in the piece) are not only shaping curriculum policy for Texas, but since Texas is the second largest textbook market in the country, they are also shaping curriculum for a good chunk of America.

Private schooling and homeschooling look pretty good right now.
