Evangelical Ecumenism

John Fea   |  January 2, 2009 Leave a Comment

Today I read a short blog post on evangelical ecumenism by Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological Seminary. (For those unfamiliar with Fuller, it is one of the flagship evangelical seminaries in the country). Mouw’s thoughts fit well with my previous post on evangelicalism (in response to Historiann’s post and her commentators’ remarks) and the thoughts of Christine (scroll down), a Messiah College student who wrote a very interesting comment to my post. Mouw is an evangelical whose religious life is informed by a variety of other Christian traditions.

Rather than focusing on the ways evangelicals have co-opted the term “Christian,” Mouw worries about the way evangelicals have allowed “latitudinarian Protestants” to co-opt the term “ecumenical.” The entire post is worth a look for anyone still interested in this conversation.
