The last half of September will be a busy month of conferences and speaking.
On September 17 I will be at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia doing a book talk on The Way of Improvement Leads Home. I will be joined by John Nagy, who will be talking about his book on Revolutionary War mutinies, Rebellion in the Ranks. The folks at the HSP are calling the event “The People of Revolutionary America: From Spies to Chaplains.”
Then it is off to Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio for the biennial meeting of the Conference on Faith and History (Sept. 18-20). I will participating in a panel discussion on the state of early American history. My talk will focus on the place of microhistory in early American studies. I am also looking forward to hearing a paper from Chad, a former student who will be presenting his work at the undergraduate conference.
After I return home from Ohio I am heading down to the Northern Neck of Virginia to do two book talks. On September 22 I will be at the Lancaster (VA) Public Library doing a talk on Fithian’s Virginia experience at an event sponsored by the Library and the Mary Ball Washington Museum. The next day I will drive down to Heathsville to do a talk for the “Books Alive” program at the Northumberland Public Library. The people of the Northern Neck love Fithian and his diary. This was where Robert Carter III’s plantation, Nomini Hall, was located.
On Thursday, Sept. 25 I am back in Grantham, PA doing the keynote address for the “Friends of the Murray Library” annual meeting at Messiah College. I will be speaking on the topic: “From Farmer to Patriot: The Tale of Philip Vickers Fithian, Presbyterian and Patriot.”
On September 27-28 I will be in Philip Vickers Fithian’s hometown of Greenwich for the 100th anniversary of the erection of the Greenwich Tea Burners Monument. I will be there all weekend, attending the events, doing a book talk, and talking to readers and potential readers in the “Author’s Tent.” See my previous post for the schedule of events.
If you are in the area for any of these events please stop by and say hello.
