I was thrilled to open my mailbox today to find Maxine Lurie’s review of The Way of Improvement Leads Home on the H-Net listserv for New Jersey history. You can find professor Lurie’s review here. If I am not mistaken, I think this is the book’s first significant review.

This is a positive first review, thorough and constructively critical. >>For my own part, I do enjoy reading bibliographies and/or bibliographic essays; I always find a handful of new sources to track down. I’ve noticed there are not bibliographies in other Penn books I’ve read (e.g., Blum’s book on Du Bois). Perhaps this helps cut costs of the book a little bit, and an editorial decision.>>I also like the point Lurie made about the book being readable and accessible. I couldn’t agree more.
Yes, I tend to agree with you about bibliographies. For whatever reason, Penn does not include them in their books. You can, of course, always read through the footnotes!>>Thanks for the post, Phil.
