PVF on the Jersey Shore

John Fea   |  August 1, 2008 Leave a Comment

One of my favorite sections of Philip Vickers Fithian’s writings are his diary entries on his trip to what today is described as the “Jersey Shore.” During an itinerant preaching trip to the Jersey coast, Fithian headed east through the “wilderness” (known today as the “Pine Barrens”) and got his first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean at a spot near present day Atlantic City.

Fithian returns to the Jersey Shore this weekend. (Although a few miles south from where he originally arrived). I will be speaking at the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean City, NJ on Sunday, extrapolating a bit about the tensions in Philip’s life between God’s call and his own ambitions.

(I still have a few more things to say about Williamsburg–stay tuned).
